About Lonavala

Lonavala is a hill station situated in the beautiful Sahyadri mountain ranges of Maharashtra, and is very popular as a weekend getaway especially in the monsoon season. It is located midway between Mumbai and Pune, and well connected by road and railway.

Lonavala is famous for its many lakes and dams, and also called as the 'Lake District' of Maharashtra by many people. The hills here adorn magnificent lush greenery during the monsoons, and hence is a favorite tourist destination in the rainy season. Lonavala is also probably one of the best spots for trekking near Mumbai.

Lonavala history
It is said the very long ago, the area of Lonavala was a part of the Yadav dynasty empire. In recent history, the place gained prominence during the Maratha and the Peshwa rule, when the place was of strategic importance because of the several forts located in its vicinity. Shivaji's famous 'Mavla' warriors belonged to this region. (Lonavala is a part of 'Maval' Taluka in Pune District)

Later in the 18th century, during the rule of British empire, Lonavala and Khandala were rediscovered and developed into hill stations, and it has remained that way since then.

Reaching Lonavala by Road:
Both the Mumbai-Pune expressway and the Mumbai-Pune old highway pass through Lonavala. Hence reaching by road is quite simple.

Reaching Lonavala by Train:
Also most of the trains on the Mumbai-Pune route halt at the Lonavala railway station. Hence reaching Lonavala by train is also very convenient.

It is this easy accessibility from the cities that draws a large number of tourists to experience the beauty of Lonavala and Khandala.

Lonavala-Khandala tourist attractions

The major tourist attractions here are Lonavala lake, Bhushi dam and lake, Valavan dam and lake, Tungarli lake, Ryewood Park, Rajmachi point, Dukes Nose cliff, Karla caves and Bhaje caves, Tiger's Leap, Wax museum and several others.

Also there are several forts in the vicinity such as the Tung and Tikona forts, the Visapur fort, and the Koregad fort. The area of Lonavala is full of several lakes and the place sort of comes alive in the monsoons. Undoubtedly one of the best trekking spots near Mumbai.
